Ok, what are the tips to get past this unforgiving level? And literally, its the fourth visit to the elevator. Whatever "level" that is, not sure. I can get up to the top level and stand over the yellow support, but cannot get the timing down on the springs. I get nailed every time no matter how closely I watch for a pattern - and I'm sure there is some pattern.

Because of this, I can't crack 130,000. My high score is right around 127,500. I can get to this level more often than not, and sometimes, I get there without dying at all. But all four men are wasted by a spring.

Help. Please.

You need to start whoring more points. You should have more then that by that level if im not mistaken.

Correct, I'm not whoring points. I do try to nail as many fireballs on the rivet level as possible, but I don't spend time jumping Kong's foot, and I don't use the first hammer on the barrel level.

I wrote up a guide using all the tips people submitted in a BYOAC thread, and the elevator screen is covered. With a little practice you should be able to get past it almost every time, but it is certainly the hardest part of DK. The guide is in the DK group at COSP.

Thanks, man. Do you have a link? I don't know what COSP is.

Me too

I always get stuck on the 3rd one when I can get to it, which is not most of the time. I don't play my DK very often, but when you don't have the time, you don't get much practice. My high score is 96,500 IIRC.

There's plenty of info on the net and the trick is called a C-spring. When the springs enter the screen the first place they land is the key.

First off - when you make it to the last landing move Jumpman a tad to the left. Keep moving Jumpman to the left a little at a time until the springs are barely touching you (calling it a very narrow margin for error). Once you have jumpman positioned, now start watching the springs enter and where they hit on the rivet under DK's crotch. The C-spring is the only one that will land directly on top of the rivet. When you see this wait for the C-spring to jump over you and hastily run into the middle and wait ontop of that rivet. Now position jumpman little by little to the right where the springs are barely touching you as they come down. Once again wait for the C spring and when that passes over you run to the ladder and go up. I can usually get this about 85% of the time. This portion is truly all about timing.

It's more than that. You really need to watch the spring that follows it as well. If the following spring bounces on about the same spot or to the right of the first, you have to turn back. Only proceed up the ladder if the 2nd spring bounces to the left of the 1st (and the further back that spring lands, the easier it is to make it up). Of course my guide covers these details.

Cleverly: no problem. I'd like to know how it works out for you! I tried to keep the guide simple while covering all the important points. It's not intended for beginners, but if you have the basics down then it should be pretty helpful.

For beginners, there is a good DK book that was published way back then (I had the book as a kid). It's not infallible though, so don't take everything in it as gospel. http://rapidshare.com/files/94060523/How_to_Win_at_Donkey_Kong.pdf.html - it's also linked from the DK group at COSP.

Might be more to it - but it works "as mentioned earlier" 85% of the time for me.

Yes, but don't you want it to be 95%? Donkey Kong - 4th Elevator Level - F'in A (22)

This approach also means you don't necessarily have to wait until you get that perfect spring. The springs don't really land in exactly one of 3 places, so really you can make it up the ladder even after springs that bounce a little to the left of the elevator mount.

I don't know why everyone has a problem with the later elevator levels.
Once you get to the fourth level they are the same.
I can tell by the bounce of the springs which one to go on,then it's all about timing.
I use the method above sometimes but there are two springs that bounce the same and you have to go on the 1st one,if you go on the second spring the next one will get you on the ladder.

I didn't know anyone did have a problem with later levels until this thread, because you're right - they're all the same.

Well, the third elevator level is not the same as the fourth. I'm stuck at the fourth. If the fourth is the same as all the elevators thereafter, then once I break past the fourth, I can count on getting kill screen, yes?

It depends on how you refer to them. I've always heard (and called them) the 3rd elevators, since it's the 3rd elevator screen you encounter, but it's on level 4, so calling them level 4 elevators is also correct Donkey Kong - 4th Elevator Level - F'in A (31) If you play the Japanese ROM's on MAME, you get an elevator on level 1, so the tough ones are the 4th time you get the elevators (still on level 4)

I tried to be clear in my initial post: I can get to the FOURTH VISIT to an elevator level. Don't know if that is Level 3, 4 or 5.

well, then you passed the hard one the first time Donkey Kong - 4th Elevator Level - F'in A (35) The hard ones are the 3rd visit, unless, of course, you're playing the Japanese ROM sets. (in which case, every level, you always get barrels, conveyor belts, elevators, rivets, in that order, so it should be obvious. I'll assume you're playing the US set and not the Japanese, since your in California)
